Majors Softball is designed for girls 9-12. As with baseball, this is the age at which we start playing competitively. That said, Majors is still considered an instructional league with an emphasis on fundamentals and enhancing each player’s abilities in a competitive environment. Kids pitch at this level with pitch counts strictly adhered to. One home plate Umpire is used at this level.
Rather than formal tryouts, coaches will divide players into teams following first practices. The goal will be to supply each team with an even amount of talent and pitchers. Parent requests for specific coaches, or to be on specific teams, will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and are not guaranteed in order to ensure team equality and competitiveness.
We will officially kick off the Softball season with a Mini Clinic the second week of April (the week following Spring Break). As space becomes available and weather allows, we plan to start holding open practices. Register early so you can be notified of pre-season practices!
Games begin in late April and typically end the first week of June. Practices are 2-3 times per week pre-season with practices continuing during the game season. Coaches set practice frequency depending on field availability and scheduling. We ask players and families to be prepared to commit to three days of practice/games per week.
Practices and home games are held on Travers Park Field 4. Interleague games are played with teams outside the Sandpoint area (i.e. Priest River, Bonners Ferry, Rathdrum). We will be hosting and traveling to games with these communities.
Games are no longer then one hour and forty minutes OR six innings, whichever is first. Games against other communities usually start at 6:00pm. Games between two local teams may start earlier. Games are played Monday through Friday and occasionally Saturday. We generally schedule for two games per week, and as many away games as home games.
Sandpoint Little League buttoned jersey shirts and visors are provided to players by the league. SLL also provides coaches with helmets, bats and catching equipment. Cleats are required. Baseball pants and sliding shorts are recommended. Players need to have a baseball mitt. At this level balls are the full-size (usually yellow) 12” softballs.
Softball is relatively new to Sandpoint Little League. We look forward to forming All-Star teams in coming years.
