Fastpitch Softball Umpire Opportunity!

Sandpoint Fastpitch Little League Umpire Sign-ups

February 21, 2017

Letter from the New Chief Umpire of Sandpoint Fastpitch

Dear Players, Parents, Coaches, and Returning Umpires,

A new season is quickly approaching and I hope everyone is getting ready for a new season of playing and player development.  I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself.  My wife and I moved to Sandpoint in 2016 to retire and give a something back to the community.  I have an extensive background of over 40 years experience in playing or officiating Softball, Baseball, and basketball, 30 years alone devoted to officiating.  I have umpired or officiated in Kentucky, California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington and coached basketball, baseball, softball, and served on the boards of 5 associations.  I have worked from minors to high school varsity to collegiate games including many playoff games.  I had to take a couple years break due to a severe retinal tear in 2010 suffered from a foul ball during a game, so getting back behind the plate is no longer an option by doctors order.

In my many years of sports involvement, the one of the things that ruins a season quickly is the lack of umpires or officials.  Players play, coaches coach, fans support, and umpires call balls and strikes.  I am dedicated to making sure those wishing to Umpire have that chance to participate in a professional, safe, and respected manner and your player has qualified umpires.  Even though I cannot don the plate gear anymore, I can train, sometimes work the bases, but more importantly provide a steady hand in the Sandpoint Fastpitch Umpiring program growth.

We are currently looking for Umpires for the top two divisions.  Without committed umpires for the approximate two month season (usually one week day and a double-header Saturday), it makes for a difficult and frustrating season for all. The pay is very good for this level so it makes for some extra spending money, gets you outdoors for fresh air, and let's you give back to the community as a positive role model.  One would say it is a win-win-win.

I will be at the tryouts on Saturday the 25th to answer any questions you may have, you may give me a call (208) 217-4237, or email me da_referee@yahoo.com.    We will be holding one or two how to clinics after sign-ups before season play in conjunction with the boys Umpire program so you would be welcome to check it out.   Without players, fans, coaches, and officials it would not be a sport.  Come on and give it a try.

Officially Yours,
Jim Hagler
