Welcome to Sandpoint Little League

Minors Softball

Minors Softball is an instructional division for league ages 8-11 with an emphasis on fundamentals and enhancing each player’s abilities.  Coaches focus on the reinforcement of fundamentals including catching, proper throwing motion, base running, and developing proper swing mechanics.  Through practice and play, players learn rules and strategies of the game.  Players also have an opportunity to learn basic pitching skills at this level, and while pitching may be a combination of kid- and coach- pitch at the beginning of the year, by the end of our season it will be up to the girls to strike each other out!

Teams

Rather than formal tryouts, coaches will divide players into teams following our pre-season clinic.  The goal is to supply each team with an even amount of pitchers, catchers, and talent.  Parent requests for specific coaches, or specific teams, will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and are not guaranteed in order to ensure team equality and competitiveness.

Season

We will officially kick off the Softball season with a Mini-Clinic before the week of Spring Break. As space becomes available and weather allows, we plan to start holding open practices. Register early so you can be notified of pre-pre-season practices!

Games begin in late April and typically end the first week of June.  Once teams are finalized, teams will practice up to 3 days a week before games start, with practice days likely dictated by weather as much as anything.  Once games start, we try to make the field available for practice as often as possible.  At the Minors level, expect field time (game or practice) 2-4 times a week, depending on your coach's discretion, field availability, holidays, etc.

Location

Practices and home games are held at Travers Park in Sandpoint.  Interleague games are played with teams from outside the Sandpoint area.  We don't yet know which other communities will be fielding Minors Softball teams, but we do expect to be hosting and traveling to games with other communities, usually within an hour of Sandpoint, including Post Falls.  Other games will be played between the Sandpoint teams.  This year's schedule will be determined once each Interleague community has completed their signup process, and the district supplies an Interleague schedule.

Games

Local games are one hour and forty minutes OR six innings, whichever is first.  Games may be played any day, Monday through Saturday.  Weekday games against other communities usually start at 5:30pm, and game duration can vary.  Weekday games between two of our local teams may start earlier.  Saturday games may be played any time of day, but usually take place in the morning.  (Interleague teams like to play on weekends so as not to have to travel on a school night, but there may be times when traveling on a school night is unavoidable.)  We plan to schedule one or two games per week for each team.  We target at least 12 games per team, which is the minimum requirement for All-Stars eligibility.

Equipment

Sandpoint Little League buttoned jersey shirts and visors are provided to players by the League.  SLL also provides teams with helmets, bats and catching equipment.  Cleats are required, and players need to have their own ball gloves.  Baseball/Softball pants (typically black) and sliding shorts are recommended.  At this level balls are the mid-size (usually yellow) 11” softballs.

All-Stars

All-Stars extends the season into the summer months.  Whether or not we have a Minors All-Stars team will be determined by coach and player interest and availability.  More information will be made available when practical.  Stay tuned!
